  1. The largest Negro demonstration for freedom since the 
  2. abolition of slavery took place here peacefully today. More 
  3. than 200,000, according to police estimates, came in a vast 
  4. but orderly throng to the Lincoln Memorial to demand 
  5. freedom now.

  7. Away from the Mail, Washington was a deserted city. The 
  8. whites stayed at home, offices were empty, bars closed, 
  9. and military policemen took over the downtown street 
  10. crossings. Outside, some thousands of troops in complete 
  11. battle order stood by.

  13. They might as well have stayed in barracks. Although the 
  14. crowd was twice as large as was expected, and long after 
  15. the march got under way special buses and trains were still 
  16. arriving from every part of the country, there was a 
  17. complete absence of tension.
